It should come as no surprise that here at TLW we think lighting is incredibly important. We talk about it all day, every day and are truly passionate about how vital it is to getting lighting right. But now is the time for us to start to show everyone.

When describing the importance of lighting we usually focus on several key elements. These include the difference between task and ambient lighting, different colour temperatures and the effect that these have on a space and the actual design and planning of a lighting scheme. There are a lot of elements to consider when it comes to your lighting design, but first and foremost you need to ask yourself: what could the end result be?

Well, this is a question we have been thinking long and hard about. We’ve written blogs, spoken to customers and had numerous meetings, but we realised something extremely important: this question can be answered in a few seconds. What could the end result of your kitchen, bedroom or bathroom be if you get your lighting right? The answer isn’t in writing or in words, it’s in the visualisation of that lighting.

So we spent a lot of time planning and designing and created something that we think truly demonstrates what the end result can be.

AND HERE IT IS

This animation demonstrates layers and levels of lighting. It shows a lighting scheme going from nothing, to basic, to showstopping in less than 20 seconds! With each layer that is added the kitchen comes to life! And it is in this visualisation that you are able to picture your own room and understand the potential in your own space.

The difference between the lit and unlit kitchen is huge but it is in the build up of the lighting that we can begin to understand how a lighting scheme is designed.

To begin with, the kitchen is dark. The colour of the cabinets look different and it would be incredibly difficult to complete important tasks like reading or cooking.

The first layer of lighting is added: plinth lights. This is a fantastic example of a subtle ambient lighting layer that would be perfect for late in an evening or early in a morning when you only need light to see where you’re going and do not require full bright lights.

The next addition is over cabinet lighting. This is another layer of ambient lighting that is perfect as mood lighting where task lights are not required. The effect of this gives depth to the room and makes it warm and inviting but is not the correct lighting scheme for tasks such as cooking.

The first layer of task lighting is added. In cabinet lighting is a fantastic addition to a kitchen. Where a kitchen has glass fronted units in cabinet lighting makes this a beautiful feature. Where cabinets do not have glass doors in cabinet light is an extremely useful way to make the most of all your storage space and ensure you can always find what you need in every cupboard.

Under cabinet lighting; perhaps the most important layer. This bright and imperative task lighting ensures that everything you do in your kitchen is done as safely as possible. If under cabinet lighting is not effectively planned it can produce unsightly dark patches and leave areas of important work space unusable.

Ceiling and pendant lights are the final piece of the puzzle. Ceiling lights are functional and entirely necessary in a kitchen, casting light onto all areas from the highest possible position in a room. Pendant lights are also functional, bright and useful, but are also beautiful and versatile. They really tie the entire lighting scheme together and give you an opportunity to show your style. Whether they’re simple and elegant or bright, creative and colourful, they bring an element of artistic flare to a room and finish the look perfectly.
